Sage and Coombe was commissioned to design a marine firehouse and adjacent harbor as part of a nationwide program to improve port security, partly funded by the Department of Homeland Security. Working with the requirements that the pier maintains public access on all sides and necessary sightlines of public pier access and zoning view corridors. The new facility was designed using sustainable materials and strategies as a model for future New York City civic projects.

Set at the edge of the Homeport Pier and facing the Stapleton Neighborhood Redevelopment, the firehouse for FDNY Marine Company 9 features living quarters, locker and changing facilities for the crew, and a garage and maintenance area for a new fireboat.
The design intent was to provide the FDNY with a modern facility that engages the long architectural traditions of FDNY firehouses. To convey character and a sense of history, the building uses a referential palette of new and traditional materials, bold signage, and floor-to-ceiling glass façades that allow the public to observe the company’s work.
The project includes a green roof, a thermal hot water system, photo-voltaic panels, the maximized use of daylighting, and natural ventilation. A palette of sustainable materials was used so that this highly visible building can symbolize the FDNY and the growing opportunities in sustainable construction.
Working with the NYC Economic Development Corporation and the FDNY team, the project received approvals from the NYS DEC, the Public Design Commission, and the Waterfront Permit Division of the Department of Buildings.
